Vietnam Souvenirs: Nine of the Most Treasured Keepsakes
You haven’t really traveled to Vietnam if you don’t shop!
Other than enjoying the food and views of Vietnam, many tourists love to shop and bring back a little of Vietnam to their home country. From handwoven textiles, traditional crafts to the famous Vietnamese coffees and teas, there is no shortage of items that capture its essence. If you're looking for something special to remember your trip by, or to bring home as gifts for loved ones, we’ve narrowed down a list of some authentic Vietnamese souvenirs.
Áo Dài: traditional Vietnamese dress
Ao dai can be customized by experienced tailors and brought back to your country as a souvenir
The Áo Dài is Vietnam’s traditional dress and symbolizes elegance and cultural pride. Typically worn by women, this long, flowing garment consists of a fitted tunic worn over trousers. Áo Dài can be found in many different styles, from simpler cotton versions to intricately embroidered silk designs. While most often associated with formal events or celebrations, purchasing an Áo Dài is a wonderful way to bring home a piece of Vietnam’s heritage. In cities such as Hoi An, which is famous for its tailors, you can have one custom-made for you.
Silk and embroidery
Buying local embroidery can be a bang for the buck.
Vietnam has a long history of silk production. Regions like Van Phuc village near Hanoi are famous for high-quality silk fabrics. Vietnamese silk is soft, lightweight, and has a distinctive sheen, making it ideal for scarves or dresses. In Saigon, and throughout Vietnam, you can find markets that sell embroidered silk items from pillowcases and table runners to drapes. The intricate embroidery often depicts traditional Vietnamese scenes, such as pagodas or water buffalo making it a decorative (and wearable!) souvenir.
Traditional Vietnamese paintings
Dong Ho Painting - Wedding of the Mouse
It’s no surprise that Vietnam is a country of vibrance, including its painting scene. Most famously are Dong Ho woodblock prints and Hang Trong paintings. Dong Ho prints originate from Dong Ho village and often depict folk tales, animals, or historical scenes. They are made using natural materials, such as ground seashells for white and tree bark for black, giving them a distinctive rustic feel. Hang Trong paintings which boast bright, bold colors are often seen during festivals. A traditional Vietnamese painting is a beautiful way to bring home a piece of local culture.
Vietnamese coffee
Vietnamese coffee is a must try when traveling to Vietnam
Vietnam is probably most known around the world for its coffee. As the world’s second-largest producer of coffee, the unique brewing methods and rich coffee culture make this a souvenir you must bring home. The most famous type of coffee is cà phê sữa đá, or iced coffee with sweetened condensed milk, a popular drink served in cafes across the country. You can purchase Vietnamese coffee beans or ground coffee at local markets or specialty shops, with varieties such as Robusta and Arabica being particularly common. For a true Vietnamese coffee experience, make sure to get a Vietnamese coffee filter, known as a phin, so you can make drip coffee the traditional Vietnamese way.
Vietnamese tea
Indulge yourself in Vietnam culture through the flow of tea
Tea is deeply ingrained in Vietnamese culture. Green tea and herbal teas are most commonly consumed across the country. Lotus tea is a unique but popular tea that has tea leaves being infused with the delicate fragrance of lotus flowers. Jasmine and artichoke tea are among other popular choices. Many tea shops and markets sell beautifully packaged tea which makes for perfect suitcase-friendly gifts or for enjoying a taste of Vietnam at home.
Handicrafts from ethnic minorities
Bat Trang pottery - Vietnam national heritage and an unmissable activity for tourists
Vietnam is home to 54 ethnic groups, each with its own distinct traditions and crafts. In regions such as Sapa or Mai Chau, you will find an abundance of handmade textiles and crafts made by ethnic minority communities. Handwoven fabrics, often featuring bright colors and geometric patterns, are used to create items like bags, scarves, and pillow covers. You can also find wooden carvings, silver jewelry, and bamboo products made by these groups which are beautiful souvenirs and purchasing them also supports local artists.
Non La: conical hat
Conical hat is so iconic in Vietnam that you definitely want to bring back home one of these
The Non La, or conical hat, is one of the most iconic symbols of Vietnam. Traditionally worn by farmers and laborers to protect themselves from the sun and rain, the Non La has become a popular souvenir for visitors. While wandering through markets, you will probably stumble on hats with intricate designs or hand-painted decorations. While it may not be the fashion choice to wear back home, the Non La is a meaningful souvenir and makes for a beautiful decoration.
Bamboo and rattan products
Phu Vinh rattan handicraft is affordable and can be a great memento
You will notice that bamboo and rattan are widely used materials in Vietnam, particularly in rural areas where these plants are abundant. Locals use these materials to create a plethora of household items including baskets, trays, lampshades, and even furniture. These eco-friendly products are not only practical but also showcase traditional Vietnamese craftsmanship. While transporting furniture back home may be out of the question, smaller pieces like baskets or placemats are easy to pack and make for a statement piece in your home.
Coconut candy
Coconut candy is a representation of Vietnamese culture, and also really tasty!
Calling all sugar lovers! Coconut candy is a delicious treat to bring home. Made from coconut cream, malt, and sugar, these chewy candies are a specialty of the Mekong Delta region. You can find various flavors, including durian, peanut, and pandan. Many travelers opt to buy coconut candy directly from small family-run factories during tours of the Mekong Delta, but if your itinerary doesn’t take you to the Delta, you can also find them in markets across Vietnam. They are packaged in small bags or boxes which makes it an easy and tasty souvenir to travel with.
